Friday Night Flicks: 7pm in the Abbott Room

This month Friday Night Flicks will present four films which defy easy categorization. All of the films will be shown at 7pm, and are free of charge.

May 4 The Station Agent (Directed by Thomas McCarthy, 2003)

When Fin McBride ( Peter Dinklage), a lonely young dwarf, moves into an abandoned railroad depot, he expects a life of solitude. But he finds himself increasingly entangled with his neighbors. Ruthe Stein of the San Francisco Chronicle called it "as touching and original a movie as you're likely to see".

May 11 The Sweet Hereafter (Directed by Atom Egoyan, 1997)

Ian Holm gives a stunning performance as a lawyer who comes to a small Canadian town which has experienced an unbearable tragedy, hoping to convince the residents to file a class action lawsuit. Playback Magazine voted it the greatest Canadian film ever made.

 

May 18 The Cooler (Directed by Wayne Kramer, 2003)

Bernie Lootz is so unlucky; a Las Vegas casino employs him as a "cooler", who makes other people unlucky just by being near him. And then Bernie falls in love and his luck changes. William H. Macy and Alec  Baldwin star.

 

May 25 To Die For ( Directed by Gus Van Zant, 1995)

A dark comedy based on the Pamela Smart case. Nicole Kidman plays an ambitious "weather girl" who seduces a young man and convinces him to murder her husband. Written by Buck Henry, and co-starring Matt Dillon and Joaquin Phoenix.
