"Herring Run "
In anticipation of “The Sardine Extravaganza” as part of the Belfast Harbor Festival on August 21st the Belfast Free Library will have an exhibit of photographs about the Maine sardine industry titled, “ Herring Run.” The exhibit will consist of photographs from the Penobscot Marine Museum that depict the Maine sardine industry throughout its history. Collections featured will include the Carroll Thayer Berry collection, the Atlantic Fisherman Collection, The Maine Sardine Council Collection, and the Eastern Illustrating & Publishing Co. Collection. The photos show both the catching and netting of sardines as well as the packing of sardines for the retail market.
In addition to the photographs from the Penobscot Marine Museum collection the exhibit will also include current images of the remains of the Stinson Sardine Factory in Belfast by local artists Barbara Maria and Julie Cyr. The exhibit will run through August.
